Rarest Occasion: Kim Jong Un Apologizes

Bumgye M.S NaYeon Kim

Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s leader, has apologized to President Moon for killing a 47 year old South Korean official via a letter. According to South Korea’s Defense Ministry, a 47 year old official had been on an inspection vessel, floating near the Northern Limit Line (NNL), when he was identified by North Korean soldiers. The ministry claims that he was then shot 10 times and subsequently incinerated. However, the letter sent by Kim Jong Un tells a different story from what South Korea has declared.

The leader called the incident “a disgraceful affair”, and told that he felt “very sorry” for “disappointing” President Moon. In addition, The North gave their results of its investigation. However, their claims distinctly differ from that of ours. "The troops could not locate the unidentified trespasser during a search after firing the shots, and burned the device under national emergency disease prevention measures," an official representing the Blue House told a briefing, referring to the North Korean account.

North Korea’s unusual apology is seen in various ways. Thousands of South Koreans are outraged at what appears to have been the brutal killing of an unarmed civilian. Some even say that such deceptive conduct must not be forgiven so easily because of an “insincere apology”. On the other hand, some view the attitude of the North as “a considerable change” and are hopeful for a change in the relationship between North and South.
