[강하람의 과학칼럼2] 수면의 중요성 why do we need sleep?

We send of our day sleeping, going into our dreamland, but still, we have no idea what is going on after we close our eyes. Funny thing is that a lot of scientists have no idea about sleep as well. We thought it is just for the brain to shut down and get a little bit of rest, but sleep might be the most important activities for humans and to the animals. To study sleep process, this where neuroscience kicks in.

First, to explain what happens in the brain, we need to know the structure of the brain. The brain has left and right side, cerebrum which is the top of the brain, brainstem which connects the brain to spinal cord, and a pineal gland that is located in the middle of the brain.

Now sleep has its own plans and patterns, and they are controlled by two networks of chemical and electrical signal in our brain. During the day (which the sun is brightly shining) neurotransmitters release deep within our brain to keep cerebrum alert and to think all the time.

Now, let's do some challenges. Try not to think about anything, Just try. Right! You can’t think about nothing because even though you think you are thinking of nothing, you are thinking of “Nothing” so this answers that your brain thinks all the time. But as the night comes around the neurons we used during the day breaks down to make APT for energy. The byproduct of that is called adenosines. They build up and starts the sleep control neurons, which makes you sleepy.

Our brain acts and is a big biological clock where it syncs with earth’s 24-hour cycle. There is a rhythm that keeps us awake for the day because of the light. When the light comes into our eyes it thinks that it is morning or afternoon, which makes us stay awake. As the light goes out, our pineal gland releases hormone melatonin into our bloodstreams which makes us feel sleepy and wanting to close our eyes. This is why you shouldn’t look at your phone before you go to sleep because the brain can actually think that it is morning because of the artificial lights.

Sleep is very important to us because it is the only time of the day where the brain can take a rest and shut down as well. When we sleep it is a time for the brain to take out the “Neuron trash” which helps us to think more creative next morning. Also when you are stressed due to not sleeping, then your brain can actually shrink to a smaller size and make us feel miserable in the morning.

Other fatal information is that if you do not sleep more than 7~9 hours than you will feel depression, along with heart disease, diabetes, and cancer if it is worse! A long time ago when the light bulb (artificial lights) weren’t invented, people would usually go to sleep at 7 (which is the time for the sunset) and wake up around 12 and do other activities, sleep around 2 am, and wake up again in the morning. That is the usual sleep cycle that is healthy for us.

A scientist has been extracting information from the past and comparing to the people from the modern and the answer that shared with the world is that we are getting sleep deprived! So even though you have homework or project to do, drop everything you do and go to sleep, because your health is more important than your homework project, or anything that does not relate to sleeping.
